Indoor Track Update - February 2, 2009

GREAT WEEK OF WORKOUTS
The week without a meet came at a good time. The workouts went great this week and the intensity and efforts were the best we have seen so far during the indoor season. The 300's in the relays were not only impressive because of the times run, but also showed us the competitive nature of many of you. The distance intervals were also very impressive. Your marks at the UHSTCA meet should be indicative of your hard work.

UHSTCA CHAMPIONSHIPS
This meet is considered the Utah Indoor Championships. The top six places score points towards the TEAM title. We will enter you in events that will help our chances of scoring as many points as possible.
All of the field events are Friday. There will be no bus Friday. Start arranging your rides. The bus will leave Saturday morning at 7:00 am. I will pay the $4.00 for your first event for everyone going on Friday and everyone riding the bus on Saturday. Each additional event costs $2.00. I will have a handout for you Monday that covers all of the meet information. There is no pre-registration for the meet. You will sign up for events at the meet.

SIMPLOT GAMES
The Simplot Games are just 2 ½ weeks away. I can still make some changes with the entries. Let me know if you have decided on changing events. If you haven’t sent me your USATF #, get it to me ASAP.
We will have a meeting on Feb 17th for everyone going to Simplot. Your waiver and money will be turned in at that time. I’ll hand out the waivers Monday.

OUTDOOR TRACK
The meeting for Outdoor Track is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, February 24th. The weather may dictate when the actual workouts will begin. Start recruiting your friends to join the TEAM. This can be a very exciting year for Titan Track and Field.

T-SHIRTS ARE IN
The cost for the t-shirts is $15 for regular or sleeveless. Pay in the office and bring me the receipt. First come, first choice on sizes and style.

CONGRATS GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Lady Titans need two more wins to clinch the Region One Championship. They are undefeated in region play, 14-1 overall, and are ranked 4th in State. Almost all of the girls ran track last year- that makes their accomplishments more satisfying to the old Track coach. Come out and support them Tuesday when they play Weber.

Indoor Track Update - January 26, 2009

WSU INVITATIONAL
The Titan Indoor Record list took a beating at the WSU meet Friday and Saturday. Admittedly, it’s a little easier to set a record at a young school, but the performances were impressive nonetheless. At this stage of our training, improvement is our main focus. And school and personal records are an indication that we are moving in the right direction.
Tyrell Yardley had the top individual performance of the meet as he won the 55m dash in 6.53. That is the #12 time ever run in Utah. Chris Jackson shattered the school record in the 55m hurdles as he placed 2nd in 8.32. Austin Costley set two records placing 4th in the 400m dash (53.80) and also broke the 1600m run record running 4:45.31. Aaron Hill raised his record in the shot put to 42'08". Preston Williams also improved his school record running the 800 in 2:11.56.
Hannah Williams ran 12:04.94 to place 3rd in the 3200m run setting a school record in the process. McKayla Williams lowered her own record in the 400m dash to 1:02.16. Sasha Russell’s 10.02 in the 55m hurdles and Lindsey McFarland’s 7.91 in the 55m dash were also new records. Sam Fleming’s 11'10.50" is a record in the long jump. Jessica Pauni threw 34'00.75 to place 4th in the shot put. The mark was just ½ inch off her own record.
There were several other great performances that did not result in school records. Shelby Cadwell ran two very good 400's in the open 400 and 4x400m relay. Kelsey Westbroek just missed records in the 55m and 200m dashes. Kuyler Thompson had a good PR in the shot put. Kyle Kelly ran his usual tough distance double in the 1600 and 3200m runs. Chris Smith was an ironman running some very good times in the 55, 200, 400 and 4x400. Alex Garrett’s two 400's and high jump were probably not what he wanted, but he continues to work hard and will continue to improve. Dillon Cadwell does a great job of working hard in practice and running very hard in meets. His times will continue to drop.
Eventually, complete results can be found at:
www.weberstatesports.com. They aren’t posted yet.

Indoor Track Update – Jan 19, 2009

BYU INVITATIONAL
This huge meet was a good one for the Titans. While we didn’t bring home many awards, we did bring home a ton of PR’s. And at this stage of the game, that is what is important. As coaches we were impressed with the competitive nature of so many athletes.
Top finishers in the meet included Hannah Williams 5th place finish in the 1600m run and 7th place in the 800. Chris Jackson placed 4th in the 60m hurdles. Jake Rossmango set indoor school records in both the 1600 and 3200. Preston Williams won his heat in both the 800 and 1600. Kyle Kelly had PR’s in the 1600 and 3200, and had the “Ironman” feat of the week running an extra lap in the 3200. Lindsey McFarland had a great meet just missing the finals in the 60m dash and also had very good times in the 200, 400 and 4x1 lap relay. Sam Fleming ran very well in the hurdles, just missing the finals.
There were several other outstanding performances with a total of 11 indoor school records set and dozens of personal records.
Complete results can be found at:

Indoor Update - January 12, 2009

USU MEET
As I’ve said before, what a difference a year makes. Out first indoor meet of the season was a huge success. It was night and day when compared to last year’s first meet. Everyone who competed now has a mark to start with and something to compare future marks to.
There were many great performances- too many to list all. Jessica Pauni was the only Titan to capture a first as she won the shot put throwing 33'05. Hannah Williams had a great meet running 5:37.6 to finish 4th in the 1600m run. She also ran a 2:29.4 leg on the 4x800m relay, a time that would have won the open 800. McKayla Williams placed 4th in the 60m hurdles and ran a great leg (27.4) on the 2x200m relay. Kelsey Westbroek’s 8.66 was our best 60m time and she ran a very good leg on the 4x200m relay. Hilary Peterson’s 1:06.04 in the 400m dash and 29:4 split in the 4x200m relay were impressive performances. Taylee Hamblin ran two good 800's with her 2:48.4 showing that there are some great things to come from the sophomore.
For the boys, Austin Costley had a great meet running 4:53.7 in the 1600m run and 2:08.8 split in the 4x800m relay. Jake Rossmango, Preston Williams and Kyle Kelly also had some very good marks in their first meet of the season. Chris Jackson and Anthony Winegar made the finals of the 60m Hurdles running 8.88 and 9.11. Chris Smith was impressive in his Titan debut running great legs on the 4x200 and 4x400m relays. Alex Garrett cleared 5'10 in the high jump and ran 57.76 in the 400 in some very good early performances.
Eventually, the meet results will be posted at: http://utahstateaggies.cstv.com/sports/c-track/ust-c-track-body.html.

Indoor Update - Jan 5, 2009

WE'RE UP AND RUNNING!!
While facilities will limit much of what we will be able to do, we want to take advantage of every opportunity we get to work out and improve ourselves. Indoor workouts are always dependent upon facilities, weather, etc.. It is important that you take advantage of every opportunity to become the best athlete possible. You will only hear/read this about 1000 times over the next five months: If you get beat by a much better athlete, so be it. Do not allow yourself to get beat by an opponent because they have worked harder or been better prepared than you. You can=t control natural ability. You can control your desire to excel and your work ethic. And in high school, the desire to excel and a good work ethic will usually defeat natural ability in the long run.

USU CAMPS
Those attending the USU Camps gained a great deal of information that will help in the future. Put the ideas to good use.
