Track Update - May 31, 2010

Titan Track Bulletin - May 31, 2010

AWARDS / BARBECUE
Thanks to everyone who helped make the evening enjoyable and memorable. I hope everyone got filled up. For those who missed it, here are the 2010 Titan Track and Field award winners:
GIRLS OVERALL MVP- Hannah Williams
GIRLS TRI-TRACK MVP’s- Sasha Russell, Mayra Franco, Lindsey McFarland
BOYS TRACK MVP- Austin Costley
BOYS CO-FIELD MVP’s- Hunter Naisbitt and Aaron Hill
BOYS TOP POINT WINNER- Chris Jackson.
There were many other very deserving individuals who were considered for awards- that just showed what a great year it really was for Titan Track and Field.

GREAT SOUTHWEST CLASSIC
Congrats to the seven Titans selected to represent Utah at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque June 5th. They are Lindsey McFarland, Hannah Williams, Jake Rossmango, Hunter Naisbitt, Aaron Hill, Tanner Russell and Kuyler Thompson. Syracuse had the most athletes selected for the Utah team.

LETTER CERTIFICATES / MEDALS
For those earning letter certificates, they are in my room. I also have awards from the UHSTCA Championships and Davis District Invitational. Stop by and pick them up before the end of the school year.

YEAR-END SUMMARY
If you didn’t get a copy of the year-end summary, they are also in my room. Included in the handout are Performance Lists, School Records and Utah’s All-Time Lists.

PICTURES
I have four 16gb flash drives with over 5500 pictures (thanks to Kevin Hansen for over 2000 of them) from the indoor and outdoor seasons. We will try to keep them circulating so everyone that wants to copy them will get a chance. Let’s do this: when you check them out, return them to me before school the next day. Then the next person can pick them up at lunch.

PLAQUES/T-SHIRTS
The plaques for the MVP’s and t-shirts for Athletes of the Week have been ordered. It takes quite a while for me to get the t-shirts done. Plan on getting together around the end of June to get the various awards. We’ll just meet at the track to hand them out and eat a little pizza. I’ll send out an email when all awards are completed.

CROSS COUNTRY
If you missed the Cross Country meeting or know someone that is interested in running, pick up the information in my room. The link to XC information is:

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Distance runners will be interested to know that your running buddy, Jace Nye, qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 3000 meter steeplechase last night in Texas. He will now be competing in Eugene beginning June 8th.

Track Update - May 17, 2010

Titan Track Bulletin - May 17, 2010

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
A year that saw many ups and downs came to a great conclusion at BYU Friday and Saturday. In spite of the injuries, illnesses, weather, etc., the Titans showed that the Track and Field program is continuing to grow and improve. In 2008, the Lady Titans scored 7 points at State and finished 18th. They moved up to 10th last year while scoring 19 points. This year, they rose to 5th place with 45 points. A huge move in the right direction. Two year ago the Boys placed 11th with 23 points. Last year they moved up to 4th while scoring 49 points. While the place this year remained the same, the point total was 69, just 15 behind Riverton, the State Champions. Things are progressing in the right direction, but it will be very hard to continue the trend considering the great seniors that we will be losing. They will be tough to replace point-wise, and more importantly, leadership-wise. Sophomores/Juniors- the pressure is on to continue the improvements.
As has been the case all year, the Girls were led at State by Hannah Williams. A book could be written about her two days. She started the meet by finishing 3rd in the 1600m run in 5:12.56- not exactly what she had hoped for. She then anchored the medley relay to a spot in the finals. Saturday morning, she gave an incredible effort in placing 3rd in the 3200 in a school record time of 11:22.19. Following a few hours of recovery, Hannah ran 2:18.88 in the 800m run, another school record and good enough for 5th. After about a 40-minute break, she came back to anchor the medley to a 4th place finish. This was as great a performance as this old man has seen. And this was typical of the TEAM efforts. Sasha Russell ran a school record 15.31 in the trials and 15.59 in the finals of the 100m hurdles to finish 3rd. A fitting climax to many hours of “rituals” and hard work. Mayra Franco showed she is one of the elite sprinters in the state as she was just off her school record in the 100m dash finishing in 12.64 to place 6th. Great improvement over last year. Lindsey McFarland repeated her 4th place finish at State last year with a faster time of 58.36. Jessica Pauni, throwing off of a badly sprained ankle, threw 104'04 to place 7th in the discus. Mayra, Sasha, Kelsey Westbroek and Shelby Cadwell ran an incredible 49.18 in the 4x100m trials and followed it up with a 49.59 in the finals to finish 3rd. The trial time was a huge school record. Mayra, Shelby, and Rylee Garver gave Hannah the baton in good position for the 4th place finish in the medley relay. Shelby, Rylee, Sasha and Lindsey capped off the meet by running an outstanding 4:06.76 to place 7th in the 4x400m relay.
The Boys had many great performances, but were really led by the throwers. Aaron Hill missed out on his bid to win the discus title as his 160'05 fell 7" short. If he made any mistake in his quest to become the State Champion, it was in working too hard. That caused some injuries that hampered his training. After feeling a little disappointed in not reaching his discus goal, he came back on Saturday to pop off a big throw of 50'00.50 to place 2nd in the shot put. Great event for the Titans- he finished just behind Hunter Naisbitt, who had a HUGE PR and school record throw of 54'00.50 to win the shot put. Hunter also had a great discus throw of 142'10 to place 4th. Tanner Russell finished off the great Titan throwing performances by winning the javelin with a toss of 174'08", another school record. He dominated the competition winning by 6'. On the track, Austin Costley was huge. He started by running 4:26.72 to place 7th in the 1600m run. He then ran a school record 1:55.37 to finish 2nd in the 800m run. Chris Jackson ran a school record 15.27 in the trials of the 110m hurdles, then came back to finish 7th in 15.67. Tyler Siddoway ran a tough 50.19 in the trials and then 50.42 in the finals to place 7th in the 400m dash. Tyrell Pearce ran a very good 2:00 anchor leg to get the medley relay into the finals. Taylor Russell, Jackson, Chris Brown and Preston Williams ran 3:39.26 to place 3rd in the finals of the medley. The finals of the 4x400m relay was a highlight of the meet. Costley, Siddoway, Brown, and Jake Rossmango all ran great legs to finish 2nd in 3:21.98. They could not have run faster- everything was left on the track!!
The meet was a great way to show how far the Titan program has come. And a great way to send off some truly outstanding seniors that have put so much time and effort into the quest for excellence. Any future success this program achieves can be linked to the “founding fathers / mothers” that helped get it started. THANKS for getting things going!!!

Titan Track Bulletin - May 10, 2010

REGION ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Region One Championships hosted by Syracuse Wednesday and Thursday showed that the Titans are continuing to improve. In our first year, we qualified eight individual spots and one relay for state. Last year it was 20 spots and all six relays. 2010 saw the Titans qualify in 28 individual spots and again all six relays. The Boys again finished 2nd behind Davis while the Girls were 4th behind Davis, Viewmont and Weber. Not a bad showing at all.
Hannah Williams showed why USU gave her a great scholarship. She won the 1600m run (5:21.70), 3200m run (11:41.73) and was 3rd in the 800m run (2:23.08). Lindsey McFarland’s closing finish was not quite enough as she finished 2nd in the 400m dash in 58.81. Mayra Franco continued her great improvement this year as she was 2nd in the 100m dash in a school record time of 12.58 and 4th in the 200m dash running 26.85. Sasha Russell ran 15.91 to place 5th in the 100m hurdles and 26.58 to finish 3rd in the 200m dash. Shelby Cadwell (1:01.88) and Rylee Garver (1:0-2.09) finished 6th and 7th in the 400m dash. Mary Pauni was 2nd in the shot put throwing 33'07 and 6th in the discus with a toss of 86'08. Jessica Pauni was 5th in the shot throwing 32'05. Rachelle Holden had a big PR leap of 15'10.75 to place 7th in the long jump. Kelsey Westbroek, Maddie Cook, Shelby and Mayra ran 52.38 to finish 5th in the 4x100m relay. Sasha, Rylee, Shelby and Lindsey finished 4th in the 4x400m relay running 4:12.81. Maddie, Kelsey, Rachelle Holden and Daylyn Johnston finished 7th in the medley relay. While finishing second to Davis again, the boys significantly narrowed the gap from last year. Considering the injuries and setbacks, that was a great accomplishment. Austin Costley had an outstanding meet winning the 1600m run (4:32.27), 3200m run (9:49.65) and finishing 2nd in the 800m run (1:56.99). Chris Jackson tied for 1st in the 110m hurdles (15.32) and was 2nd in the 300m hurdles (40.89). Chris Brown placed 4th in the 200m dash (23.31) and 400m dash (52.16). Tyler Siddoway ran 51.35 to finish 3rd in the 400m dash. Tyrell Pearce had a big PR in the 800m run finishing in 1:59.26 to place 4th and earn a trip to State. Preston Williams was right behind placing 7th in 2:00.06. Jake Rossmango ran 4:35.33 to place 3rd in the 1600m run. An injury prevented him from finishing the 3200 and competing in the 800. Taylor Russell continued his big improvement running into a huge head wind to finish 5th in the 100m dash in 12.00. He ran 11.42 in the trials. The throwers came up big in the field events. Hunter Naisbitt threw 51'08 to win the shot put and 140'04 to place 3rd in the discus. Aaron Hill picked up a couple 2nd places in the shot put (48'06) and discus (153'01). Jordan Peterson had a 5-foot PR in the shot put throwing 45'05 to finish 6th. Kuyler Thompson (151'05) and Derek Gann (140'08) placed 3rd and 7th in the javelin. Jacob Zaugg narrowly missed a trip to state finishing 8th in the pole vault clearing 11'08. In relay action, Alex Vanderloo, Jackson, Russell and Jonah Lewis ran 44.60 to place 3rd in the 4x100. Brown, Costley, Pearce and Siddoway were 3rd in the 4x400m relay running 3:30.85. And in one of the most exciting events of the meet, sophomore Jaxon Hansen ran a 4-second PR 2:03 800 leg in the medley to hold off Davis, Weber and Northridge at the line. Russell, Lewis and Jackson got the baton to Jaxon in good position to set up the great finish.

Track Update - May 3, 2010

Titan Track Bulletin - May 3, 2010This will be an abbreviated Update as I’ve got a little too much to do to get ready for Region to go into detail about the meets.

SYRACUSE / NORTHRIDGE / FREMONT TRI-MEET
The Titans emerged victorious at the tri-meet held at Northridge Wednesday. The Girls scored 45 points to slip by Northridge, who had 44, and Fremont with 42. The Boys finished with 81 points. Northridge had 31 and Fremont 30. As usual for 2010, the meet was run in poor weather conditions. I’d go into more detail but the results sent out by the host school were a little suspect.

BYU INVITATIONAL
The Titans battled the snow, rain and wind at the 100th BYU Invitational Friday and Saturday. We didn’t load up athletes trying to keep them rested and healthy going into Region. Over 80 schools from Utah and surrounding states competed in the meet. Hunter Naisbitt was our lone individual champion as he captured the shot put throwing 50'06. Chris Jackson ran 15.28 to set a school record and place 6th in the 110m hurdles. Aaron Hill threw 143'08 in terrible conditions to finish 3rd in the discus. Jake Rossmango, Chris Brown, Preston Williams and Tyler Siddoway ran great legs to place 2nd in the 4x400m relay in 3:25.93, just off the school record.
Hannah Williams had a great meet for the Lady Titans. She ran a school record and state qualifying time of 2:20.31 to finish 2nd in the 800m run. She also ran 11:30.63 to finish as the #3 5A runner in the 3200m run for another school record and state qualifying time. Mayra Franco ran 12.74 to place 6th in the 100m dash. Mayra, Sasha Russell, Shelby Cadwell and Kelsey Westbroek ran a school record time of 50.17 to place 7th in the 4x100m relay.

MANDATORY REGION TEAM MEETING
Everyone competing at Region must meet Tuesday in Room 2118 at 2:40. No exceptions!!!
