REGION ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Region One Championships hosted by Syracuse Wednesday and Thursday showed how far the program has come in just one year. After 6th place finishes in 2008, the Boys placed 2nd and the Girls 3rd in the toughest region in the state. In 2008, we qualified athletes in eight individual spots and one relay for State. This year, we qualified 20 individual spots and all six relays. That’s a huge improvement.
Hannah Williams showed she is one of the top distance runners in the state as she won the 3200m run (11:42.72, a school record), was 2nd in the 1600m run (5:18.06) and 4th in the 800m run (2:22.58). Lindsey McFarland finish very strong moving from 4th to 1st over the last 100 meters to win the 400m dash in 59.45. Jessica Pauni won the discus (105'00, a school record) and was 4th in the shot put (34'08.50). Mary Pauni also qualified for state in those event finish 5th in the shot put (32'11.50) and 5th in the discus (87'09). Ashley Hunzeker threw a school record 100'01 in the javelin to finish 4th. Sasha Russell finished 5th in the 100m hurdles in 15.82, good enough for a school record and a trip to State. McKayla Williams was 4th in the 300m hurdles. Her 47.04 in the trials was a school record. Several Titans scored and just missed qualifying for State. Mayra Franco was 6th in the 100m dash in 12.95, a school record. Shelby Cadwell (1:02.39) and Hilary Peterson (1:03.68) were 6th and 8th in the 400m dash. Taylee Hamblin had a big PR 2:27.06 to place 7th in the 800m run. Ashley Hunzeker was 6th in the discus at 87'02. Lindsey, Shelby, Sasha and McKayla ran 4:08.56 to place 2nd in the 4x400m relay. Sasha, Kelsey Westbroek, Shelby and Mayra ran 51.72 to finish 5th in the 4x100m relay.
The Boys 2nd place finish was led by Tyrell Yardley. He won the 100m (10.60w), 200m (21.92w) and 400m (49.14) dashes. Wind prevented a State Record in the 100 once again. Aaron Hill had a big PR, school record throw of 164'08 to win the discus. That is the leading throw in the State this year. Austin Costley led wire-to-wire to win the 800m run in a school record 1:58.71. He also had a be PR/SR 4:27.65 to finish 3rd in the 1600m run. Hunter Naisbitt threw 46'11.50 to place 2nd in the shot put. Chris Jackson overcame back problems to place 3rd in both the 110m hurdles (15.39w) and 300m hurdles (41.90). The medley relay of Chris Smith, Chris Brown, Anthony Winegar and Jake Rossmango ran 3:42.04 to place 3rd. Smith, Jackson, Yardley and Winegar ran 3:29.85 to finish 2nd in the 4 x 400m relay. Just missing trips to State in individual events were Winegar, 8th in the 100m dash (11.32); Chris Smith, 6th in the 400m dash (51.82); Jake Rossmango, 8th in the 1600m run (4:37.75) and 6th in the 3200m run (10:14.60, a school record); Spencer Cook, 7th in the pole vault (12'00); Weston Atkins, 6th in the 800m run (2:04.42); and Tyler Siddoway (139'00), Alex Garrett (137'01) and Kuyler Thompson (136'00) who were 6th, 7th, and 8th in the javelin.
