Indoor Track Update – Feb 22, 2010
A GREAT SIMPLOT GAMES
First a big THANKS and editorial. Simplot was a huge success because of the efforts of many people. Thanks to all the drivers for the support. And a huge thanks to all of the Titans whose great attitudes and cooperation made this the most enjoyable I can remember in my 25 years of going to the meet. I appreciate the way you conducted yourselves throughout the meet and during the entire trip.
Now to the meet. What a show by the Titans! Two years ago 13 Titans went to their first Simplot Games. It was a good experience- not much else to brag about. This year, the Titans were dominating in the meet that attracts many of the best athletes in the nation. Many performances could only be described as incredible. Picking the most outstanding would be tough, but I will have to go with the Boys Medley Relay. Tyler Siddoway, Chris Jackson, Chris Brown and Austin Costley placed 3rd behind two all-star teams from California running 3:34.41, the fastest ever run indoors by a Utah team and ranked #3 in the nation. Austin’s 1:56.5 split would have won the 800 run and Tyler’s 50.5 would have been 5th in the 400 dash. A big indication of how far we’ve come it that our “B” TEAM of Dillon Cadwell, Shane Russell, Tanner Russell and Preston Williams ran 3:46.23 to place 9th in the event. Siddoway, Brown, Costley and Jake Rossmango came back a little later to place 4th in the 4x400m relay in 3:30.48, a school record and the fastest time by a Utah team this
In girls’ individual events, Hannah Williams was our top finisher. She ran 5:12.56 to place 3rd in the 1600m run, a school record and the #2 time in Utah this year. Jessica Pauni threw a school record 38'04.50" to finish 9th in the shot putShe also threw 37'02" for another school record in the weight throw. Lindsey McFarland ran several great races with her best being a 59.88 to place 12th in the 400m dash. She has the #2 mark in Utah. Taylee Hamblin ran a big PR of 2:25.96 to finish 14th in the 800m run. Lindsey, Hannah, Sasha Russell and Shelby Cadwell ran 4:24.61 for a school record in the medley relay. Shelby, Sasha, Lindsey and Kelsey Westbroek ran 1:51.96 for a school record in the 4x200 relay.
In Boys individual events, Hunter Naisbitt threw a big PR of 49'08.75" to finish 8th in the shot put with an school record and the #2 mark of the year in Utah. Aaron Hill was close behind with his 47'06, another PR. Austin Costley and Jake Rossmango’s 4:29.88 and 4:30.29 in the 1600m run in the trials made them the only duo from one school in the finals. Preston Williams ran a tough 2:04 in the 800 to make finals, but sacrificed individual pursuits to run a 2:00.8 leg in the “B” TEAM medley relay. Tyrell Yardley limped to a 50.70 in the 400m dash on an injury. He could not run in the finals.
Most outstanding performances do not show up in the stats. Here are a few exceptional ones:
Kyle Kelly- 1st 1600 under 5:00. 100% effort all the time;
Julian Alvarez- Sub 5:30 in 1600. 10 months ago his PR was 7:18. Along with Kyle, perhaps the best TEAM supporters around;
Steve Wilcox- great leader, big 1600 run and good 4x800 leg;
Tanner Russell- great relay legs;
Jamison Nielson- good hurdles, very good relay legs;
Kuyler Thompson- won the exhibition jav throw;
Kelsey Westbroek, Hilary Peterson, Sasha Russell, Shelby Cadwell, Haley Busby, Daylyn Johnston, Morgan Costley- great relay legs.
There were many other outstanding efforts- too numerous to mention all of them.
This meet was a good indicator of how good the Titans can be outdoors. We can be a force and can be in the hunt for State Championships in May. But it will take COMMITMENT and HARD WORK by many people. Your help is essential.
Complete results of the meet can be found at: www.simplotgames.com.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the Athletes of the Week were Kuyler Thompson, Chris Brown, Preston Williams, Steve Wilcox, Taylee Hamblin, Haley Busby, Hilary Peterson, Kelsey Westbroek, Daylyn Johnston and Morgan Costley. All had a great meet and great indoor season. I don’t think any of them missed a workout or meet all season. They were all big factors to our indoor success.
