Track Update - May 17, 2010

Titan Track Bulletin - May 17, 2010

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
A year that saw many ups and downs came to a great conclusion at BYU Friday and Saturday. In spite of the injuries, illnesses, weather, etc., the Titans showed that the Track and Field program is continuing to grow and improve. In 2008, the Lady Titans scored 7 points at State and finished 18th. They moved up to 10th last year while scoring 19 points. This year, they rose to 5th place with 45 points. A huge move in the right direction. Two year ago the Boys placed 11th with 23 points. Last year they moved up to 4th while scoring 49 points. While the place this year remained the same, the point total was 69, just 15 behind Riverton, the State Champions. Things are progressing in the right direction, but it will be very hard to continue the trend considering the great seniors that we will be losing. They will be tough to replace point-wise, and more importantly, leadership-wise. Sophomores/Juniors- the pressure is on to continue the improvements.
As has been the case all year, the Girls were led at State by Hannah Williams. A book could be written about her two days. She started the meet by finishing 3rd in the 1600m run in 5:12.56- not exactly what she had hoped for. She then anchored the medley relay to a spot in the finals. Saturday morning, she gave an incredible effort in placing 3rd in the 3200 in a school record time of 11:22.19. Following a few hours of recovery, Hannah ran 2:18.88 in the 800m run, another school record and good enough for 5th. After about a 40-minute break, she came back to anchor the medley to a 4th place finish. This was as great a performance as this old man has seen. And this was typical of the TEAM efforts. Sasha Russell ran a school record 15.31 in the trials and 15.59 in the finals of the 100m hurdles to finish 3rd. A fitting climax to many hours of “rituals” and hard work. Mayra Franco showed she is one of the elite sprinters in the state as she was just off her school record in the 100m dash finishing in 12.64 to place 6th. Great improvement over last year. Lindsey McFarland repeated her 4th place finish at State last year with a faster time of 58.36. Jessica Pauni, throwing off of a badly sprained ankle, threw 104'04 to place 7th in the discus. Mayra, Sasha, Kelsey Westbroek and Shelby Cadwell ran an incredible 49.18 in the 4x100m trials and followed it up with a 49.59 in the finals to finish 3rd. The trial time was a huge school record. Mayra, Shelby, and Rylee Garver gave Hannah the baton in good position for the 4th place finish in the medley relay. Shelby, Rylee, Sasha and Lindsey capped off the meet by running an outstanding 4:06.76 to place 7th in the 4x400m relay.
The Boys had many great performances, but were really led by the throwers. Aaron Hill missed out on his bid to win the discus title as his 160'05 fell 7" short. If he made any mistake in his quest to become the State Champion, it was in working too hard. That caused some injuries that hampered his training. After feeling a little disappointed in not reaching his discus goal, he came back on Saturday to pop off a big throw of 50'00.50 to place 2nd in the shot put. Great event for the Titans- he finished just behind Hunter Naisbitt, who had a HUGE PR and school record throw of 54'00.50 to win the shot put. Hunter also had a great discus throw of 142'10 to place 4th. Tanner Russell finished off the great Titan throwing performances by winning the javelin with a toss of 174'08", another school record. He dominated the competition winning by 6'. On the track, Austin Costley was huge. He started by running 4:26.72 to place 7th in the 1600m run. He then ran a school record 1:55.37 to finish 2nd in the 800m run. Chris Jackson ran a school record 15.27 in the trials of the 110m hurdles, then came back to finish 7th in 15.67. Tyler Siddoway ran a tough 50.19 in the trials and then 50.42 in the finals to place 7th in the 400m dash. Tyrell Pearce ran a very good 2:00 anchor leg to get the medley relay into the finals. Taylor Russell, Jackson, Chris Brown and Preston Williams ran 3:39.26 to place 3rd in the finals of the medley. The finals of the 4x400m relay was a highlight of the meet. Costley, Siddoway, Brown, and Jake Rossmango all ran great legs to finish 2nd in 3:21.98. They could not have run faster- everything was left on the track!!
The meet was a great way to show how far the Titan program has come. And a great way to send off some truly outstanding seniors that have put so much time and effort into the quest for excellence. Any future success this program achieves can be linked to the “founding fathers / mothers” that helped get it started. THANKS for getting things going!!!
