Indoor Track Update – Feb 8, 2010

WARNING!! This is a long Update!!
STATE CHAMPIONS!!!!
Flashback: Two years ago, the Titan Track Club’s highest finish at the UHSTCA State Championships was 6th place by our Boys 4x1 lap relay. Two years later: Boys 1st, Girls 3rd, Combined 1st!!!! The Boys closest pursuers were Davis and Riverton while the Girls trailed the same two schools by less than 10 points. Why the dramatic change? Two years of hard work and commitment by some great seniors and help from some talented underclassmen brought about the change. While winning the titles (Boys and the Combined) is a great achievement, they are just stepping stones to some loftier goals. It was great to see the enthusiasm after getting the trophy. Let’s hope we get to see that many more times this year.
Many of these summaries will be incomplete. The web site for results crashed and I have to rely on my memory for many things. This update will be a little different as I will try to highlight many different performances, even if they didn’t score. If there was one overall highlight of the meet (other than the title), it was that every distance runner had at least one indoor PR, many had two.
GIRLS:
Jessica Pauni- 1st weight throw (34'), 5th shot put (35'11), both indoor school records;
Mary Pauni- 2nd weight throw. PR shot put;
Shae Stoddard- 5th weight throw;
Rachelle Holden- school record long jump (13'11);
Sasha Russell- 4th 60m hurdles (9.49, school record), school record 200m dash (26.95), 3rd place 4x400m relay;
Hannah Williams- HUGE day- 1st 1600m run (5:13.), 4th 3200m run (11:42), both school records. Hannah took the lead at the gun in the 1600 and fought off every challenge to capture 1st;
Lindsey McFarland- Also HUGE- 2nd 400m dash (59.14, school record), PR 200, great anchor of 3rd place 4x400 relay;
While not placing in individual events, these outstanding ladies contributed greatly to the 3rd place finish:
Kelsey Westbroek- two great relay legs, ALWAYS there to lead the TEAM;
Kiana Tebbs- big 1600 PR;
Taylee Hamblin/Hilary Peterson- both working hard, nursing injuries, still ran fast, indoor PR’s in the 800;
Morgan Costley, Haley Busby, Daylyn Johnston, Erika Hansen- lumped together because they all work hard, improve, and have desire to keep improving;
Cambria Bitter, Ella Gardner, Gabby Anderson, Cedar Frost- rookies that can become very good if they continue to put in the time and commit to becoming the best athletes possible.
BOYS:
Aaron Hill- 3rd shot put (46'07.5), 1st weight throw (57'07.75). His big throw on his final attempt was not only a school record, but also the #5 mark ever in Utah;
Hunter Naisbitt- 2nd shot put (47'11) and 4th weight throw (48'01);
Kuyler Thompson- 3rd weight throw (48'06);
Chris Jackson- 3rd triple jump (39'03.5, school record), school record long jump (19'09);
Tanner Russell- 4th triple jump (38'00), big long jump (18'07), leg in the 3rd place school record 4x200m relay;
Tyrell Yardley- 1st 60m dash (6.89, school record);
Austin Costley- 3rd 4x800m relay, 4th 1600m run (4:28, school record), 2nd 800 (1:58, school record). Austin ran a great, bold race to shatter his own school record;
Jake Rossmango- 6th 1600m run (4:30., big PR), great leg on the 4x800m relay;
Preston Williams- 1st 4x400m relay, big PR in the 800m run;
Tyler Siddoway- Huge lead-off leg in 1st place 4x400m relay (50.9), great leg in the 3rd place 4x200 relay, big throw in shot put;
Dillon Cadwell- great legs in the 1st place 4x400 and record setting 4x200 relays;
Chris Brown- great legs in the 4x400 relay and school record 4x200 relay;
Kyle Kelly- strong lead-off leg in the 3rd place 4x800m relay, big PR’s in the 1600 and 3200m runs, tougher than nails;
Brandon Yardley- big 1600 PR, good 3200;
Julian Alvarez- Big PR’s in the 1600 and 3200 runs, probably the BEST supporter of everyone on the TEAM;
Steve Wilcox- Also big PR’s in the 1600 and 3200, great leader;
Weston Atkins- good leg on the 4x800, will be a factor when he gets healthy;
Derek Gann, Jamison Nielson, Dilan Oliver- hard working, dedicated, provide depth;
Jon Hoag, Gibby Eidem, Shane Russell, Jeff Knighton, Frank Owen, Andrew Skidmore- “Rookies” who can become very good and help the TEAM if they work hard and are patient.
It was a great TEAM effort with so many contributing in ways that don’t directly show up in the point total. Let’s keep working hard and continue to improve each and every day.
Eventually, meet results should be found at: www.runnercard.com.

BIG THANKS!!
To Erica Christensen. Erica ran at Davis High while I was coaching there. She went on to run at BYU. Erica volunteered her time to help the Titans. Man, am I glad. She does a great job. Erica is very knowledgeable, but that is not her biggest asset: Her desire to help all of you improve and reach some lofty goals is what makes her such a valuable addition to our TEAM. A couple others to thank for their contributions are Jace Nye and Jared Ward. Their love of the sport has brought them out to help the Titans even though their siblings run for Davis. Their expertise and encouragement has added a great deal to our success.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the Athletes of the Week were Hannah Williams, Lindsey McFarland, Aaron Hill, Tyler Siddoway, Kyle Kelly and Julian Alvarez.

SIMPLOT GAMES
We need to meet Tuesday for a few minutes after school. I will go over final entries for the meet. Make sure you have your USATF # by then. Go to the following web site to obtain your #. The cost is $19.95.

Indoor Update - Jan 25, 2010

Indoor Track Update – Jan 25, 2010

WSU INVITATIONAL
Once again, the Titan Indoor Record list took a beating at Weber State. 11 records were set and one tied against the best competition in the state. While the records were impressive, the desire to compete and do the things that will make them better prepared for Outdoor Track of many members of the TEAM was even more impressive. How about these efforts by the distance crew: Kyle Kelly, Brandon Yardley and Jake Rossmango (3200, 1600, 4x400); Austin Costley and Preston Williams (3200, 800, 4x400); Julian Alvarez (3200, 800, 4x800); Steve Wilcox (3200, 1600, 4x800); Kiana Tebbs (3200, 1600, 4x800). While I normally don’t encourage distance runners to “triple” in these types of meets, they all wanted to do whatever possible to help make them better prepared for upcoming meets. Many others got in multiple events to get in a competitive mode as well as work on things that will help them in the future. Tyler Siddoway and Kuyler Thompson competed in four events as they not only prepare for the outdoor season, but also get ready for the decathlon.
The following set indoor school records Saturday:
Sasha Russell- 55m hurdles (6th place, 9.05) and 55m dash (6th place, 7.81): Rachelle Holden- long jump (13'05.50): Jessica Pauni- shot put (3rd place, 34'11.00), Hannah Williams- 3200m run (11:52.14): Hunter Naisbitt- shot put (2nd place, 48'11.00): Chris Jackson- 55m hurdles (2nd place, 8.20): Tyrell Yardley- 55m dash (2nd place, 6.52) and 400m dash (1st place, 49.65): Austin Costley- 800m run (2nd place, 2:03.37): and Jake Rossmango- 3200m run (10:12.59). Several other Titans had great meets. Lindsey McFarland just missed the school record in the 400m dash as her 1:01.97 was good enough for 2nd place. Preston Williams ran 2:07.31 to finish 4th in the 800m run.
While the records and places were impressive, the best thing about the meet was seeing the desire to excel and do what is necessary to become a better athlete and to help make us a better TEAM. Keep it up!!!

Indoor Track Update – Jan 18, 2010

USU MEET
Good start to the 2010 Track and Field season. The USU meet showed that we have the nucleus of the very good TEAM, but also showed that we have a great deal of work to do.
Perhaps the highlight of the meet was to see so many athletes new to the sport get a feel for what a great sport Track and Field can be no matter what their level of proficiency. There were also many other performance highlights. Setting eight Indoor School Records was definitely a highlight.
Rachelle Holden had a great first meet as she set two indoor records in the long jump (12'05.5") and high jump (4'06"). Jessica Pauni placed 2nd in the weight throw with a school record toss of 34'04.50 and also was 2nd in the shot put (34'00). Mary Pauni was 3rd in those events. Hannah Williams ran a great 1600 meters winning the event in 5:27.9. Mikelann Wilcox won the 3200m in 13:54.3. The 4x200m relay team of Kelsey Westbroek, Codie Stanley, Cambria Bitter and Shelby Cadwell placed 2nd in 1:59.4. Shelby, Kelsey, Codie and Morgan Costley were 2nd in the 4x400m relay running 4:39.4.
Aaron Hill had a good meet with his school record in the weight throw of 52'11", good enough for 2nd place. Kuyler Thompson was right behind throwing 52'07.50. Hunter Naisbitt was 3rd in the shot put with a school record toss of 46'03. Aaron was 4th throwing 44'06. Chris Jackson set a record in the long jump with a leap of 19'01", good enough for 2nd place. He came back to win the 60m hurdles in 8.84. Tyrell Yardley won the 60m dash in 6.99, just .01 off his school record. Tyler Siddoway (7.39) and Chris Brown (7.40) were 3rd and 4th. Preston Williams ran great to win the 800m run in 2:08.6. Jake Rossmango broke his own school record winning the 3200m run in 10:17.57. The 4x400m relay consisting of Yardley, Brown, Siddoway and Jackson won in 3:43.28. There were several other highlights, but USU has been slow in getting the results posted. Eventually, the meet results will be posted at: http://www.utahstateaggies.com/sports/c-track/ust-c-track-body.html.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Rachelle Holden, Jake Rossmango, and Chris Jackson. Rachelle set two school records and jumped in to run a leg in the 4x400m relay. Chris won the hurdles and also set a school record in the long jump. Jake won the 3200m run in a school record time, then came back in about 10 minutes to run a 56-second leg in the 4x400. His day was completed when he and Kyle Kelly went on a four mile tempo run when we got back to the school.

WORKOUTS
Make sure you are staying each day. We will generally meet in the Fitness Center after school each day. That way those who are ready to work out early can get going. We will meet Tuesday to lift and video some events.

POLE VAULT CAMP
Anyone interested in learning to pole vault should attend the Titan Learn to Fly Pole Vault camp. We will start Thursday at 4:00. Meet in room 2118.

Indoor Update - December 21, 2009

Titan Indoor Track Bulletin - Dec 21, 2009

FIRST MEET IDEA- bad one.
Turned out to be a bad idea. As I looked a little closer at things, I decided we hadn’t better attempt the January 1st meet. It may violate the state track bylaws and jeopardize the eligibility of anyone participating.

SENIORS- IMPORTANT
Some of you may be considering running in college. That’s a great idea!!! What you need to do is make sure everything is taken care of with the NCAA requirements. Check out the following web site so you will know if you have to take additional classes 2nd semester to be eligible:
https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common/

WORKOUTS- Dec 21-27
I will open the Weight Room and Fitness Center on December 21st and 29th at 8:00 am. If you want to lift or cross train, show up ready to work out. Try to follow the workouts as outlined on your Indoor Info handout.

RUNNING OUTSIDE
If you dress correctly, you can run outside even while the weather is quite cold. Dress in layers (spandex, Under Armor, turtle neck, sweats, etc.). Wear a beanie- 25-30% of the heat loss is through your head. Wear gloves, etc. I’ve run when it’s been as cold as -5 with no problems. If you have asthma, the air quality and cold may hamper your running. Make sure you are running on a secure surface. Don’t run along the side of the road if it’s icy. Running on fresh snow is easy on the legs- try out the “trail” that runs along the bluff. Keep up the mileage, but be careful.

USU CLINICS (January 8/9)
If you are interested in going to the USU camps (hurdles, jumps, sprints or throws) and didn’t pick up the information, let me know and I’ll email it to you. I really want hurdlers and throwers to attend. I would also like most sprinters who may be interested in the hurdles to go up to the hurdle camp Friday night, stay over, and go to the sprint camp on Saturday. I will pay for the motel room.

ATTIRE
I’m going to order some warmup pants. They are a unisex style from Brooks and come with side pockets, leg zippers, etc.. They are the type of pant that most college athletes wear. They normally sell for $60 but I can get them for about $40 if I order enough. The only color they come in is black. If you are interested, let me know and give me an idea of what size you would want.
Also, for immediate sale. I have some of the warmups we bought last year for Track. I will sell the tops for $25 and the pants for $20. The sizes I have for tops are: XL (4), L (1), M (2), S (1). Pant sizes are: XL (1) and S (2). I also have some Track hoodies left that I will sell for $25. The only sizes I have are XXL (1), XL (2), L (2) and S (1). I also have several styles of shirts that you can buy for $10 for cotton and $15 for dri-fit. If interested, check with me when we get back to school. I can show you what I have.

GREAT QUOTE
Lukas Verzbicas won the National Foot Locker Cross Country Championship last week- the first sophomore boy to do so. This is a quote from his coach- before the race. I’ve included a link to the entire article. Good quote, good ideas that we can all benefit from.
"Lukas does all of the things others are unwilling to do," O'Malley said. "Therefore, when it comes time for the starting line he has a powerful understanding of his ability. While most at a starting line are questioning whether they are ready or have done all that they can do to be ready, Lukas has answers. He eats flawlessly, he sleeps right, he trains right, and he prepares mentally right. So on race day, he is right.”

Indoor Update - December 14, 2009

Titan Indoor Track Bulletin - Dec 14, 2009

GOOD START!!!
Over 100 Titans have shown an interest in the Indoor Track Club. That’s good, but not great. Contact your friends or others that might be interested. Have them contact one of the coaches to get further information.

VETERAN TRACK ATHLETES
Thanks for helping the new kids with the workouts. That will also help you become a better athlete.

NEW TRACK ATHLETES
Work hard and learn what it takes to get better. Don’t get discouraged. Always remember to compare yourself to yourself, not to the person who has been competing for years or who may have superior talent.

USU CLINICS
For those who want to attend the clinics (January 8/9), make sure you pick up the infor from me before the break. I would really like all throwers and hurdlers to attend. The camp is also for jumpers and sprinters- you are more than welcome to attend those sessions also.

WORKOUTS- Dec 14-18
There may be some changes from what was in your original handout.
EVERYDAY- ALL EVENTS- I will try to be in the Fitness Center from 2:30 until 2:40 to go over the workout for the day. Weather and facility availability may frequently change the scheduled workouts.
Monday- Sprinters/Hurdlers/Jumpers- meet in Room 2118 at 2:40. Be dressed, ready to workout inside.
Tuesday- Speed Camp - meet in Small Gym at 2:40. Be dressed ready to workout inside. All Sprinters, Hurdlers and Jumpers should attend.
Wednesday- Throwers meet in Room 2118 at 2:40. Be dressed ready to throw.
Thursday- EVERYONE - meet in the Fitness Center at 2:40. Workout changes will be announced.

AN IDEA- maybe a bad one
Had an idea while running today in the snow. How about having an outdoor track meet that starts at exactly 12:00 am January 1st? It would be the first outdoor meet in the nation and the winners of each event would lead the 2010 National Outdoor Rankings. The events would be the 400m “stride”, 3200m run, power position shot put and standing long jump. The events would be modified to prevent injuries. There could be a little New Year’s Eve pre-meet party. Everything would be held at the track- it’s a full moon that night. Give me some feedback.
